Umwelt-Pickerl Austria: M1 cars are exempt

Updated June 30, 2026

Environmental zones (Umweltzonen) in Austria restrict vehicle emissions in specific regions including Vienna, Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Styria, and Tyrol.

Passenger Car (M1) vs. Commercial (N1) Distinction

  • Standard M1 Passenger Cars: Currently, standard private passenger cars are exempt from mandatory Umwelt-Pickerl sticker requirements in most Austrian environmental zones.
  • N1 Trap Warning: If an SUV or crossover is registered as a commercial goods vehicle (Class N1 fiscal registration), it strictly requires a colored Umwelt-Pickerl sticker matching its Euro emission class (Euro 1 - Euro 6).

Penalties for Incorrect Registration

Driving an N1 fiscal vehicle in an environmental zone without a valid Umwelt-Pickerl carries fines up to €2,180.
