Mandatory Passenger Car Emergency Equipment Checklist in Austria

Updated June 30, 2026

When operating a passenger car (M1 category) in Austria, driver safety legislation requires specific emergency equipment to be carried in the vehicle at all times.

Required Emergency Items for Cars

  1. First Aid Kit (Verbandkasten): Must be stored in a dust-proof, durable container and comply with ÖNORM V 5101 standards. The kit must be complete and unexpired.
  2. Warning Triangle (Warndreieck): Must be EC-approved (ECE R27) and sturdy enough to withstand wind gusts when placed on highways.
  3. Reflective Vest (Warnweste): High-visibility vest complying with EN ISO 20471 standards. It must be accessible from the driver’s seat (not locked in the trunk).

Penalty Risks

Failure to carry required emergency equipment during a police check incurs on-the-spot administrative fines ranging from €36 to €70 per missing item.

Keep your equipment inspection dates organized in WrooWroo to avoid missing first-aid kit expiry dates.
